At our practice, we prioritize conservative treatment methods for spine disc prolapse, aiming to relieve pain and restore function through non-surgical means whenever possible. Our initial approach includes pain-relieving medications, physical therapy, and other supportive treatments that help many patients manage their symptoms effectively. Only if these non-invasive options do not provide sufficient relief, or if there are progressive neurological symptoms, do we consider surgical procedures. Here are some of the surgical options we may proceed with when necessary:

1 Discectomy

Discectomy is a surgical procedure used to remove part of a herniated disc that is pressing on a nerve root or the spinal cord. This minimally invasive technique aims to relieve nerve compression, reducing pain, numbness, or weakness in the limbs. Discectomy is often recommended for patients who experience persistent nerve pain or have not responded to conservative treatments. The procedure is typically performed with small incisions, allowing for faster recovery and minimizing tissue damage.

2 Laminectomy

Laminectomy is a procedure that involves removing a part of the vertebra called the lamina to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots. This procedure is commonly used for spinal stenosis cases, where the narrowing of the spinal canal leads to pain, numbness, or weakness. By removing part of the lamina, space is created around the nerves, providing relief from chronic symptoms. Laminectomy may be considered when conservative treatments fail to alleviate severe or debilitating pain and is especially effective for patients with lumbar spine issues.

3 Fixation and fusion surgery

In cases of severe disc degeneration or recurrent herniation, fixation and fusion surgery may be recommended. This procedure involves fusing two or more vertebrae together to stabilize the spine, which can alleviate chronic pain and prevent further disc issues. Although this surgery restricts some movement in the affected spine segment, it is effective for maintaining long-term spinal stability, especially in cases where the spine has become unstable.

When should you do it?

In treating spine disc prolapse, we always start with non-surgical methods. Our goal is to relieve pain and improve mobility through medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle adjustments. Surgery is only considered if these options don’t work. A discectomy may be recommended if there is severe nerve pain from a herniated disc that doesn’t improve with other treatments. This procedure removes the damaged part of the disc to relieve pressure on nerves.
