Knee replacement surgery is a common procedure to relieve pain and improve function in individuals with severe knee joint arthritis or injury. The two primary types of knee replacement surgeries are partial knee replacement and total knee replacement.
Also known as unicompartmental knee replacement, involves replacing only the damaged portion of the knee joint, typically one side (medial, lateral, or patellofemoral compartment), while preserving the healthy parts. This procedure is ideal for individuals whose arthritis or damage is confined to one compartment of the knee. It requires less invasive surgery and generally offers quicker recovery and less post-operative pain compared to total knee replacement. However, it is only suitable for patients with limited knee damage, where the other parts of the knee are still in good condition.
On the other hand, involves replacing the entire knee joint, including the femoral, tibial, and sometimes the patellar components. This procedure is typically recommended for individuals who have severe arthritis or damage affecting multiple compartments of the knee. Total knee replacement provides significant pain relief and improved function, though it generally requires a longer recovery time and more extensive rehabilitation. It is ideal for patients with widespread joint degeneration who need a more comprehensive solution to restore knee function.
Knee arthroscopy is typically recommended if you have persistent knee pain, swelling, or instability that doesn’t improve with rest or physical therapy. It’s often used for conditions like meniscus tears, ligament injuries, or to remove loose cartilage.
